Tuart (Eucalyptus gomphocephala)

Tuart is one of the six forest giants of Southwest Australia, the tallest known Tuart reaching 47 metres in height. The valuable white gum tree was originally common on the swan coastal plain, until it was felled for export and displaced by urban development around Perth.

  • FOREST GIANT

Tuart was originally named by the Noongar people as “Tooart”, Moorun or Mouarn. It is classed as one of the six forest giants of Southwest Australia and can reach up to 47 metres in height. As a durable hardwood it was originally sought after for structural timber, railway carriages and boat building. It has been in high demand ever since British settlement of the Swan River Colony & due to being over deforested became displaced and is now found mostly in suburban ares and local parks. Few Tuart forests remain, with one of the more recognised being the protected Ludlow forest in the Busselton region. We source our Tuart ethically and will never fell a Tuart tree for the sole purpose of making drum.

  • THE NEW ANTIQUE WHITE PIANO OF DRUMS

While on the outside Tuart can look similar to a Marri tree, the inside of the timber has an exquisite clean, creamy white finish, reminiscent of an antique white found on an old, aged piano. Tuart’s can be identified and distinguished from Marri by its fibrous, dull grey bark that flakes off in small pieces and its ice-cream cone-like flower buds, appearing in groups of seven, which when in blossom, have gorgeous white flowers.

  • VINTAGE WARMTH

Tuart although surprisingly hard & dense delivers a true vintage warmth not unlike tones heard from the classic 30s & 40s swing era. It has a softer creamy spread, with an articulate, not too overbearing metallic note to finish, with an even amount of explosive bite in higher registers. Tonally in our range of drums, it sits somewhere in between a Marri & River Red. Tuart is truly one of the most vintage sounding drums in our lineup.
