River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis)

River Red Gum is one of Australia’s most widely occurring eucalypts. It is commonly found growing along or near almost all seasonal watercourses, hence the name “River Red”. River Red Gum grows in a wide range of climatic conditions, tolerating extreme heat, cold and great variation of rainfall.

  • "The Many Stripes of River Red"

River Red Gums are well known for having a striking outer appearance, sometimes with many shades of striping, and its not uncommon for the tree to grow twisted and winding, most likely as a result of it’s evolution growing on river beds. However the straighter growing trees are the pot of gold that we’re after!

  • RIVER RED

River Red Gums take their name from being found growing alongside rivers and when their wood is freshly exposed is a bright red, almost blood-coloured wood. The wood is red because it contains high levels of chemicals such as polyphenols, which are a natural antibiotic when combined with air. These chemicals protect the tree from disease and most pests, and make the timber extremely durable. They were also used for various medicinal purposes by the Indigenous people.

  • METALLIC RED GUM

Quite alike Marri, River Red Gum has a fundamentally lower note, however it delivers a much more metallic note than Marri. Rich in tone as well as colour, it provides a punchy warm thump at lower tunings and a metallic bite at higher registers.
